Moving to Connecticut
Families moving to Hartford should know this is a city steeped in history. Founded in 1637, Hartford is among the oldest cities in the United States, and home to the nation’s oldest public art museum, the Wadsworth Atheneum; the oldest publicly funded park, Bushnell Park; the oldest continuously published newspaper, The Hartford Courant; the second-oldest secondary school, Hartford Public; Trinity College, an elite, private liberal arts college, and the Mark Twain House where the author wrote his most famous works and raised his family, among other historically significant attractions. In 1868, resident Mark Twain wrote, “Of all the beautiful towns it has been my fortune to see this is the chief.”
Hartford is the historic international center of the insurance industry, with companies like Aetna, Conning & Company, The Hartford, The Phoenix Companies, United Healthcare and Hartford Steam Boiler based in the city, and companies like Travelers and Lincoln National Corporation with major operations here. Hartford is also the corporate headquarters to Northeast Utilities, U.S. Fire Arms, and United Technologies. It is a center for medical care, research, and education.
Right in the city you will find Hartford Hospital, The Institute of Living, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, and St. Francis Hospital and Medical center (which merged with Mt. Sinai Hospital). The area is also called the Knowledge Corridor because of its 29 colleges and universities and 120,000 college students.
Sports are ever-changing in Hartford, so sports lovers moving here will never be bored. The Hartford Wolfpack, an American Hockey League team plays at the XL Center downtown. The venue also houses larger-profile games for men’s and women’s University of Connecticut Huskies basketball, although most home games are played at Gampel Pavillion, on campus.
Offering loads of family fun, the minor league, double-A team affiliated with the Colorado Rockies – formerly known as the New Britain Rock Cats – dubbed the Hartford Yard Goats, play at a beautiful new stadium, Dunkin’ Donuts Park. Coming out of that team were such greats as outfielder Torii Hunter, and David “Big Papi” Ortiz.
