Get to Know Kentucky
If you’re a nature lover, Kentucky is one of the absolute best places that you could hope to move to. The state has miles of rivers, acres of forest and natural preserves, national parks and everything else an outdoor enthusiast could want from their home state. If you enjoy rafting, kayaking or any other water-based outdoor activities, Kentucky has more navigable miles of water than any other area in the country, except for Alaska but the weather here is far more agreeable.
Kentucky is the only state to have a continuous border of rivers running along three of its sides with the Mississippi River to the west, the Ohio River to the north, and the Big Sandy River and Tug Fork to the east.
For people who prefer to stay dry while having your outdoor fun, there are few better places in the country for activities like camping, hiking, hunting and 4-wheeling. Some of Kentucky’s greatest outdoor attractions include: Mammoth Cave Natural Park, Red River Gorge, Jefferson Memorial Forest and Cumberland Falls, the only place in the Western Hemisphere where people can regularly see a “moon-bow”, just to name a few.
When you move to Kentucky, don’t forget your camping gear. For wildlife lovers, the state contains Bad Branch Falls State Nature Preserve which houses one of the largest concentrations of rare and endangered species in the state, as well as a 60-foot waterfall and a Kentucky Wild River. If the outdoors isn’t your thing, don’t worry, there are plenty of other attractions that dot this beautiful landscape.
Sports fans rejoice, even though Kentucky doesn’t have a team in any of the major four professional sports, the people of Kentucky would tell you that this state is an absolute haven for the collegiate athletic excellence. The Kentucky Wildcats, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, and the Louisville Cardinals are among the most storied college men’s basketball teams in the United States, combining for 11 National championships and 24 NCAA Final Four appearances. All three programs are high on the NCAA Basketball lists for total all-time wins, wins per season, and average wins per season. Specifically, Louisville ranks in the top 10 in every single major statistical category in men’s college basketball.
If college sports aren’t your thing, then Kentucky has plenty of other attractions including the Kentucky Derby horse race event held each May in Louisville, and the National Corvette Museum, the only place on earth where the Chevy Corvette is manufactured. When you get hungry, remember that Kentucky is the barbecue capital of the world and there are many restaurants and eateries that are eager to demonstrate why, if you can’t pick one, check out the International Bar-B-Q Festival that’s held in Owensboro, Kentucky, every second weekend in May.
