Even though you may know it simply as Rhode Island, the official name of the state is the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Bordered by Connecticut to the west, Massachusetts to the north and east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, Rhode Island is right in the middle of the New England region of the United States. Even though it is is the smallest state within the U.S., it is the second most densely populated with 1,050,000 people.
If you’re prepared to move to this quaint little ocean-side state, Stevens Worldwide Van Lines is more than ready to help you out. With a nationwide network full of motivated and hardworking movers, Stevens will help make your move to or from Rhode Island as seamless as possible.
Living in Rhode Island
Nicknamed “The Ocean State,” Rhode Island is composed of several large bays and inlets, totaling roughly 14% of the state’s total area. Because of its northern geographic location and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, anyone moving to the area can expect warm, humid, rainy summers and chilly winters.
Without a surprise, Rhode Island’s former economies heavily relied on the fishing industry with smaller emphasis on others including tool making, costume jewelry and silverware. Today’s economy, however, is heavily influenced by health services followed by tourism, which supports 39,000 jobs, and then by manufacturing. Typical industrial outputs are submarine construction, shipbuilding, machinery, and boatbuilding. If you are in the market for a new corporate position, several large corporations have their headquarters in Rhode Island. Moving here could land you a position at CVS Caremark, Citizens Financial Group, Bank of America, Fidelity Investments, MetLife Insurance Co., The Home Depot company or even Walmart.
Despite the small stature of this state, there are several recognizable higher education institutions available to yourself and children when moving here. Not only does Brown University call Rhode Island home, so too does Providence College and the Rhode Island School of Design.
An interest in higher education also brings with it several collegiate sporting events. Four NCAA Division 1 schools compete within this tiny basketball center. The Brown University Bears compete in the Ivy League, the Bryant University Bulldogs compete in the Northeast Conference, the Providence College Friars compete in the Big East Conference, and the University of Rhode Island Rams compete in the Atlantic-10 Conference. Even then, all four Division 1 schools compete in an intrastate all-sports competition every year, known as the Ocean State Cup.
Regardless of how you spend your time on Rhode Island, moving to this “small”, ocean-front, close-knit community will make you fall in love with The Ocean State, and Stevens Worldwide would like to help you here as your official Ocean State Mover.
