Your Move to Salt Lake City
Looking to improve your knowledge of Salt Lake City before you move? Salt Lake City, often shortened to “Salt Lake” or “SLC” is the capital city and the center of the Salt Lake-Ogden-Provo metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young, Isaac Morley, George Washington Bradley and numerous other Mormon followers, who extensively irrigated and cultivated the arid valley. Because of its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, the city was originally named “Great Salt Lake City”—the word “great” was dropped from the official name. Home to the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and Temple Square, Salt Lake City was historically considered a holy city by members of the LDS church; Brigham Young called it a “Kingdom of Heaven on Earth”.
Today, however, less than half the population of Salt Lake City are members of the LDS Church. Immigration of international LDS members, mining booms, and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad initially brought economic growth, and the city was nicknamed the “Crossroads of the West.” SLC is home to University of Utah, Westminster College, the Violin Making School of America, as well as branches of Brigham Young University, and Utah State University.

The franchise began play in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz, based in New Orleans, Louisiana, and moved to Salt Lake City in 1979. The 2002 Winter Olympic Games (XIX Olympic Winter Games) were held in Salt Lake City, and the Call of the Champions was performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and the Utah Symphony Orchestra.
Salt Lake City is home to one Fortune 500 company, Huntsman Corporation, and two Fortune 1000 companies, Zions Bancorporation and Questar Corporation.
