Here are some facts we’ve collected about New Jersey for you to pour over before your move. New Jersey (NJ), nicknamed The Garden State, was the 3rd state in the U.S., becoming a state on December 18, 1787. The capital of New Jersey is Trenton, although the largest city is Newark. More than 8,899,399 New Jerseyites (or New Jerseyans) live there. Other larger and perhaps more recognized cities include Camden, Hackensack, Jersey City, Ocean City and Atlantic City (set on the Atlantic Ocean and home to casinos and entertainment).

Explore New Jersey

New Jersey’s main industry includes farming (potatoes, tomatoes, and peaches), chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petroleum-based products, insurance, and tourism. Tourists come to see the ocean and walk the iconic boardwalks.

Those moving to New Jersey are probably aware of the Jersey Shore, the coastal region of the state. Geographically, the term encompasses about 141 miles of oceanfront from New Brunswick in the north to Cape May Point in the south. The Jersey Shore area includes Middlesex County, Monmouth County, Atlantic County, Cape May County, and Ocean County. While there is no defined border between North Jersey and South Jersey, the Raritan River, Manasquan River or Interstate 195 are often mentioned as the border, with most of the shore region being located in South Jersey.

As for higher education, Princeton, Rutgers, Seton Hall University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology are true leaders in the small state and draw some of the highest potential students.

Due to proximity, New Jerseyans have many options to support professional sports. Technically there are three Major league professional teams in New Jersey. Hockey has the New Jersey Devils (NHL). The New York Giants and New York Jets are named as they are, but both play in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are technically in New Jersey, although New York has jurisdiction over it. Either way, it’s a tourist attraction you don’t want to miss!
